Arizona Abortions and Voter Registration Records

Abortions are a Needed Healthcare Treatment

This graph illustrates the total number of abortions annually by Arizona residents ages 15-44. The annual totals provide insights regarding the importance of abortion procedures for residents. Over the past three years, the number of procedures done for Arizona residents continued to increase until 2022. This trend indicates that the procedure is one utilized by many residents and is an integral element of reproductive healthcare.  In June of that year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and its 50-year model of protective reproductive rights regulations. The large drop in abortions is not simply a trend in new decision-making, but is further attributed to the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. This, a decision that has ushered in new strict legislation, lets individual states implement abortion regulations as they deem fit. Many of these have been extreme, barring critical healthcare for many residents across the U.S. The 2023 Annual Abortion Report data has yet to be released but is guaranteed to show a significant drop in abortions due to Arizona’s strict laws such as the 1864 near-total ban implemented in late April 2024.

Arizona Voter Trends

Arizona has seen a continued increase in the number of registered voters and voter turnout (ballots cast) over the past 10 years. With each new election year, more people are eligible to register and they seem to be doing so. The most Arizona ballots proportionally that made it into the ballot box, were in 2004, 2008, and 2020 with 70% - 80% voter turnout. However, there was a drop in the last election cycle in 2022, with about a 17% decrease in ballots cast and a slightly lower voter registration than the prior election year. This is important data to consider when running a petition campaign, as the success of a campaign relies on the validated signatures from registered voters. Additionally the largest success of an initiative is measured by voter turnout at the ballot box. This makes understanding voter registration compared to turn out vital to the campaign.
